When the Dartmouth Learning Network first started out, just a little over 25 years ago, it was through the combined effort of a group of community volunteers. Since that time, volunteers have continued to play an important role in improving, celebrating and delivering our programs.
Each year the Dartmouth Learning Network has between 30-50 volunteers registered to work one-on-one with adult learners. These volunteers work out in the community at various locations, tutoring in subjects like math, reading, writing, life skills, among other topics. They give of their time generously, usually meeting once a week for 2 hours with their learner, and creating lesson plans, reading over learner work and attending workshops and other professional development to increase their knowledge of current tutoring techniques and activities.
Without our volunteers we would not be able to offer the services to our learners that we do.
Thank you for all your commitment, understanding and giving!
You can help us in many different ways:
become a Tutor
We need people who are prepared to give up two hours each week for nothing more tangible than the great feeling that comes from helping someone in need. The Dartmouth Learning Network (DLN) provides training for Tutors.
become a Volunteer
Our volunteers are very special people: committed men and women who are prepared to give up their time to help people with a need. Most of our volunteers are Tutors.
become a Supporter
Have you considered becoming a Corporate Supporter of DLN? Perhaps you are a professional who could offer your professional services for an hour each month? And we need fund-raisers and helpers to help with special events.
become a Donor
Our donors provide us with the funds and equipment needed to run DLN. If you want to donate anything, please call the number at the top of the page or e-mail us. We are now able to accept credit card donations via CanadaHelps.org's secure website.
Becoming a Tutor
It only requires two hours per week to become a Tutor.
Prospective tutors are required to attend an evening orientation session at DLN. At the 1.5 hour session, you will learn a little of DLN's history and some literacy statistics. The majority of the session will be spent on increasing your knowledge and understanding of our policies and procedures.
You will then be matched with a prospective Learner, taking into account your mutual preferences (days, time, location, etc.).
The first meeting between Tutor and Learner will take place at DLN with a member of staff present. If Tutor and Learner are comfortable with the match, they will be free to meet at their preferred time and place which is booked by the Volunteer Coordinator for them. Tutors and Learners are encouraged to meet for one 1 1/2 - 2 hour session each week; Learners learn more and faster through frequent reinforcement.
Interested? Then e-mail us now, or phone us at the number shown at the top of this page. Tutors have their own page - click here to view it.
Tutor Comments
"As an avid reader, it's very satisfying to be able to help someone else enjoy reading and improving their literacy skills.
When the tutor is really interested in making a difference for the learner and the learner is willing to work hard and stick to it, anything is possible!"
~ Tutor with Dartmouth Learning Network
"Like in life, it is the small triumphs in teaching an adult learner that give you a great sense of accomplishment. I was lucky to have a learner who always tried his best, and always kept his sense of humour. Sometimes we took a step forward, sometimes a step back, and sometimes we would just tread water....but I ALWAYS left our lessons feeling that it was worth it!"

Would you be prepared to collect for us at your workplace during International Literacy Week? Or perhaps you have a couple of hours to spare during the week? Then e-mail us.
Prospective volunteers, like our prospective tutors, are required to attend an evening orientation session at DLN. At the 1.5 hour session, you will learn more about literacy and DLN's philosophy.
